WALLA WALLA, WA (February 17, 2010) – The Sweets continue to add the final pieces to their inaugural season roster, with a talented outfielder from a program that is starting the 2010 ranked in the Top 10.
Scott Gottschling, a 6’0”, 185 lb. outfielder from UC Irvine, has agreed to sign with the Walla Walla Sweets for the 2010 season. Gottschling, a native of Orange, CA, is a redshirt freshman for the Anteaters, a program that started the NCAA season ranked in the Top 10 in many national polls.
“Scott is a big, strong outfielder with a plus arm and good power at the plate,” said Sweets GM Zachary Fraser. “We anticipate that he will be a big part of our offense, and to cover a lot of ground in the expanse that is the Borleske Stadium outfield.”
While Gottschling redshirted his freshman year for UC Irvine, he established a name for himself last summer in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League. He was named an All-Star while playing for the Oahu Paddlers, and hit .319 while leading the team in hits (36), runs scored (22) and triples (4). He is expected to be a solid contributor to the Anteaters efforts to win the Big West conference this season.
UC Irvine, which revived its baseball program in 2002, has quickly climbed to become one of the marquee teams in the country. Under the leadership of Hall of Fame coach Mike Gillespie, the Anteaters were ranked No. 1 in the country in 2009, and earned a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Division I tournament, and made it to the 2007 College World Series. In addition to his remarkable accomplishments at UC Irvine, Gillespie was the coach at USC for 20 years, where he led the Trojans to four appearances in the College World Series, and a National Championship in 1998. Gillespie also coached Sweets owner Jeff Cirillo while Cirillo played at USC.
The Sweets, an expansion franchise in the West Coast League, will open up the 2010 season by hosting defending league champion Wenatchee AppleSox at Borleske Stadium on June 8. Season tickets are now available by calling 509.522.BALL (2255) or by visiting www.wallawallasweets.com.
