O'Neil Joins Sweets for 2012 Season

Spencer O'Neil will join the Sweets roster for the 2012 season

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – As the 2012 season of West Coast League baseball fast approaches, the Walla Walla Sweets are finalizing their roster. The most recent addition brings Spencer O’Neil, a graduate of Southridge High School, to Walla Walla for the summer. This will be O’Neil’s second season of WCL baseball. He played for the Cowlitz Black Bears in 2011.

O’Neil, a native of Kennewick, Washington, is a 6-foot 4-inch, 175-pound first baseman and outfielder. As a senior at Southridge High School, O’Neil hit .333, with five doubles, five home runs, and 22 RBI. In 2011, for the Black Bears, O’Neil appeared in 48 league games and hit .271 with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 26 RBI. O’Neil was selected to play in the 2011 WCL All-Star game where he went 3-4 with a double, a home run, two RBI and a run scored. He went on to be named the 2011 WCL All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player. Following the 2011 season, O’Neil was named a top WCL prospect by Baseball America (#5) and Perfect Game USA (#13).

“Spencer is a good addition to what we think is an already exciting line up,” said Sweets manager J.C. Biagi. “He has WCL experience and saw a great deal of success hitting in the middle of Cowlitz’s order last year. He adds a little pop from the left side which we haven’t had a lot of the past two years.”

Opening Night, presented by Northwestern Mutual, is scheduled for June 1 at 7:05 P.M. when the Sweets will open the 2012 season with a three-game series against the Corvallis Knights. The Sweets will also host the 2012 West Coast League All-Star game, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, on July 24. View our complete schedule by visiting wallawallasweets.com.
